A Tribute to My Grandmother

Yesterday was a sad day for me.  My Grandmother passed away.  She lived a long, beautiful life and helped shape me in many ways.  Who I am today is a direct reflection of the qualities she instilled in me.  I am so grateful I have so many memories and experiences with her.

After I got the news, I reflected on how important life is.  My Grandmother knew that I loved her deeply and was always happy to see me and hear from me.  I visited her recently and she showed me how strong she was.  She laughed and joked with me.  All the signs of deterioration that other family members had been seeing were not visible to me.  I just saw my Grandmother!!  My mother said she was doing things she hadn’t done in a while.  That is a testament to who my grandmother was and always will be to me.

Grandma, Chuck and Mom
Me and Grandma
In her final days, she showed strength and courage.  I will carry that with me always.
R.I.P. Grandma…… You are Always In My Heart!

About Carla Gentry Osorio

In an age where the day-to-day hustle of life keeps us from enjoying “the little things,” it becomes more important for us to better the quality of our life by taking time for ourselves. To care for the beauty which we have been blessed with has been a task taken for granted all too often. In sensing this need, Carla Gentry chose to share her talents as a hair designer and make our world a more beautiful place.
Carla first started in the business in 1990 in Washington D.C. and later in New York, where her contacts in the music industry opened her up to the freelance world of photo shoots and music videos. Inspired by Iman’s flawlessly classic look and Madonna’s ability to constantly transform herself to dictate trends, Carla’s self-described signature aesthetic is shiny, healthy hair with a lot of movement.  Although Carla has worked in media ranging from music videos to editorials and album packaging to commercials, her favorite bookings are personal appearances, where she has direct interaction with her clients and the final results of her work are tangible.
As co-owner of Styles New York Salon, Carla now focuses her energy on maintaining her clientele and freelancing in the entertainment industry.  Carla is a stylist that prides herself in excellence and gives nothing less than 200%. In a world where true talent is often taken for granted and unused, it is refreshing to see a stylist like Carla taking the time to bring out the best in the people that she touches and the styles she creates.
Jada Pinkett Smith, Kerry Washington, Mary J. Blige, Brandy, Ashanti, Faith Evans, Lela Rochon, Mya and Star Jones are among the celebrities with whom Carla has worked.  She has also worked on numerous music videos with artists including Luther Vandross and Blu Cantrell, as well as on commercial ad campaigns for the Gap. In addition, Carla’s work has been featured in editorials such as InStyle, Essence, Interview and Vibe.
Carla’s most recent work can be seen on TNT ‘s hit TV show “Hawthorne” where she is the personal hairstylist to Jada Pinkett Smith.
